RESUMO

AIM: To examine the positive motivational paths from perceived autonomy-supportive leadership, and the negative motivational paths from perceived controlling leadership to satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs, work motivation, work performance, work engagement and somatic symptom burden among nurses using Self-Determination Theory. DESIGN: The study used a cross-sectional design mapping nurses' perceptions of the various study variables through a survey. METHODS: Nurses working in the municipal healthcare in Norway were recruited through an electronic questionnaire sent out via a link to their emails between 29th of August and 29th of September 2020. Of them, 219 nurses completed the questionnaire. Study hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling. RESULTS: Higher levels of perceived autonomy-supportive leadership were associated with reduced levels of somatic symptom burden and increased levels of work performance and work engagement through the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and autonomous motivation, specifically identified regulation and intrinsic motivation. Perceptions of controlling leadership were associated with heightened levels of somatic symptom burden through basic psychological need frustration, amotivation and introjected motivation, along with lower levels of work engagement through need frustration and amotivation. CONCLUSION: This study underscores the positive motivational paths of perceived autonomy-supportive leadership on nurses' work performance and wellbeing through the facilitation of basic psychological need satisfaction and autonomous motivation. Conversely, the study highlights negative motivational paths of perceived controlling leadership on reduced work engagement and heightened ill-being through the basic psychological need frustration, controlled motivation and amotivation. IMPACT: This study provides insights and actionable recommendations for nurses and their leaders, emphasizing the significance of understanding the adverse impact associated with perceived controlling leadership. The findings underscore the importance of addressing these issues to mitigate detrimental effects on motivation and overall work functioning. AIM: To determine antecedents and outcomes of work engagement (WE) among nursing staff in long-term care (LTC) using the Job Demand-Resources model. DESIGN: A systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis statement and Synthesis Without Meta-analysis in systematic reviews guideline. A study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (registration number CRD42022336736). DATA SOURCES: The initial searches were performed in PsycInfo, Medline, Academic Search Premier, CINAHL and Scopus and yielded 3050 unique publications. Updated searches identified another 335 publications. Sixteen studies published from 2010 to 2022 were included. REVIEW METHODS: The screening of titles and abstracts, and subsequently full-text publications, was performed blinded by two author teams using the inclusion/exclusion criteria. When needed, a mutual consensus was obtained through discussion within and across the teams. A descriptive and narrative synthesis without a meta-analysis of the included studies was performed. RESULTS: The extent of research on WE in LTC facilities is limited and the factors examined are heterogeneous. Of forty-two unique antecedents and outcomes, only three factors were assessed in three or more studies. Antecedents-in particular job resources-are more commonly examined than outcomes. CONCLUSION: Existing literature offers scant evidence on antecedents and outcomes of WE among nursing staff in LTC facilities. Social support, learning and development opportunities and person-centred processes are the most examined factors, yet with ambiguous results. IMPACT: Antecedents and outcomes of engagement among nursing staff in LTC facilities have not previously been reviewed systematically. Engagement has been correlated with both more efficient and higher-quality service delivery. Our findings suggest opportunities to improve health and care services by enhancing engagement, whilst at the same time better caring for employees. This study lays the groundwork for more detailed research into the contributing factors and potential results of increasing caregivers' engagement. No patient or public contribution.

BACKGROUND: Shift work is associated with negative health outcomes. Routines for scheduling of shift work can help reduce negative health outcomes of shift work and improve work-life balance and social well-being for nurses working shift work. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between organizational units' routines for shift work scheduling and nurses' sickness absence at the unit level. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study design combining quantitative questionnaire data on shift work scheduling routines with data of mean percentage of sickness absence at the unit, mean level of exhaustion at the unit, mean age and percentage of women working at the unit. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 126 leaders at organizational units with nurses working shift work schedule at Oslo University Hospital answered a questionnaire about shift work scheduling. MEASURES: Three aspects of health-promoting shift work scheduling (fatigue-reducing scheduling, organizational health measures, and individual adaptation) and the extent to which operational considerations were made during shift work scheduling were used as independent variables. Covariates were mean age of nurses at each unit, mean percent female nurses, and mean exhaustion at unit level. Percent sickness absence was used as a dependent variable. METHODS: Questionnaire data on shift work scheduling routines was merged with information on average age of employees in the unit, ratio female nurses, and units' average score on exhaustion. Multivariable linear regression analyses were used to assess the contribution of routines for shift work scheduling after controlling for mean level of exhaustion, average age, and proportion of women at each unit. RESULTS: The factors "fatigue reducing scheduling", "organizational health measures" and "operational considerations" had no observed total effect on mean sickness absence. Individual adjustment in shift work scheduling had a direct negative association with sickness absence after controlling for other shift work scheduling routines, exhaustion, age, and gender. CONCLUSIONS: There is a relationship between the units' routines for shift work scheduling and mean sickness absence at the unit, and the possibility of individual adjustment was the only aspect of shift work scheduling that had an above-zero association with sickness absence. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: Routines for scheduling of shift work that enable employees to make individual adjustments to improve quality of family/leisure activities are associated with lower rates of sickness/absence.

AIM: To design, implement and evaluate a nurse-led capacity building intervention (PromoGOB) for intersectoral action for health at local governments. DESIGN: The programme was based on theories of the policy process and organizational change and facilitated by a nurse developing a health broker role. A complex intervention perspective was adopted in carrying out the study. The intervention was evaluated using a mixed method embedded design. METHODS: Quantitative component relied on a specific questionnaire. This tool, designed and piloted ad hoc, measured the capacity in terms of knowledge, awareness, resources, skills, and commitment, both at sectoral and government levels. For the qualitative component, semi-structured interviews were conducted. These explored the perceived capacity and feasibility and acceptability issues. The programme was initiated at the end of October 2019, and it lasted a total of 5 weeks. Nineteen individuals representing various sectors at a local government in northern Spain participated in the study. The data analysis was concluded by the end of March 2020. FINDINGS: PromoGOB positively influenced participants' capacity for addressing health promotion. Awareness component, intersectoral work and the nurse as health broker were essential in the programme. The necessity of political participation was identified as an issue to be prioritized in future studies. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the relevance of capacity building at local governments and the role that nurses can play in it. Further work should be undertaken to continue developing Health in All Policies approach at local level. IMPACT: This study offers a starting point for nurses to get involved in the policy process of health promotion, performing a specific role as health brokers, building capacity at local governments for addressing social determinants of health, and delving into theories and concepts of the Health in All Policies field.

This study aims to test the nomological validity of the People Performance Scales (PPS) using the job demands-resources (JD-R) model. All employees at two large companies in Norway (a governmental agency and a worker's union) were invited to complete the PPS questionnaire electronically. A total of 2,469 respondents completed the questionnaire, resulting in an 87 percent response rate. Data was analyzed Structural Equation Modelling. First, all 15 scales included in the PPS showed excellent internal and construct validity. PPS was also found to have configural-, construct-level metric- and scale-level metric invariance across age groups and genders. Second, findings indicate that the PPS can be used for both research and consultancy based upon the JD-R model, while simultaneously assessing constructs of particular importance in Norwegian and Scandinavian legislation. The PPS represents a short and efficient questionnaire which measures the most relevant working environment constructs in a reliable and distinct way. The questionnaire has great psychometric characteristics and is well suited for use in organizations to measure employees' experience of working environment factors, allowing organizations to identify areas of improvement and to support organizational development.

BACKGROUND: Norway is internationally known today for its political and socio-economic prioritization of equity. The 2012 Public Health Act (PHA) aimed to further equity in the domain of health by addressing the social gradient in health. The PHA's main policy measures were (1) delegation to the municipal level of responsibility for identifying and targeting underserved groups and (2) the imposition on municipalities of a "Health in All Policies" (HiAP) approach where local policy-making generally is considered in light of public health impact. In addition, the act recommended municipalities employ a public health coordinator (PHC) and required a development of an overview of their citizens' health to reveal underserved social segments. This study investigates the relationship between changes in municipal use of HiAP tools (PHC and health overviews) with regard to the PHA implementation and municipal prioritization of fair distribution of social and economic resources among social groups. METHODS: Data from two surveys, conducted in 2011 and 2014, were merged with official register data. All Norwegian municipalities were included (N=428). Descriptive statistics as well as bi- and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: Thirty-eight percent of the municipalities reported they generally considered fair distribution among social groups in local policy-making, while 70% considered fair distribution in their local health promotion initiatives. Developing health overviews after the PHA's implementation was positively associated with prioritizing fair distribution in political decision-making (odds ratio [OR] = 2.54; CI: 1.12-5.76), compared to municipalities that had not developed such overviews. However, the employment of PHCs after the implementation was negatively associated with prioritizing fair distribution in local health promotion initiatives (OR = 0.22; CI: 0.05-0.90), compared to municipalities without that position. CONCLUSION: Development of health overviews - as requested by the PHA - may contribute to prioritization of fair distribution among social groups with regard to the social determinants of health at the local level.

The scientific basis for ergonomics recommendations for controls has usually not been related to active goal-directed use. The present experiment tests how different knob sizes and torques affect operator performance. The task employed is to control a pointer by the use of a control knob, and is as such an experimentally defined goal-directed task relevant to machine systems in general. Duration of use, error associated with use (overshooting of the goal area) and movement reproduction were used as performance measures. Significant differences between knob sizes were found for movement reproduction. High torques led to less overshooting as opposed to low torques. The results from duration of use showed a tendency that the differences between knob sizes were reduced from the first iteration to the second iteration. The present results indicate that the ergonomically recommended ranges of knob sizes might differently affect operator performance.
